Konstantin the Great chooses Serdika/present-day Sofia/ for the first Christian capital when the Christianity is accepted as equal to the other religions in the Empire with the Milan Decree from 313. He leaves Rome and sets off in search of a site which is fit to be the centre of the Christian civilization. "Serdika is my Rome!" he exclaims when he reaches the land of the Serdi tribe.
