In Bulgaria can be traced the beginning of the European civilization. The first architectural monuments can be seen in Bulgaria- the vertical stone pillars in the Thracian sanctuaries. They are usually located at the high rocky hills and most of them are ancient astronomical observatories. The dolmens are other example of the early conscious construction activity from the IV-II c. B.C. They are built of huge stone blocks and are the first artificially engirdled and covered spaces. In the Sakar Mountains can be seen so many types of dolmens that they give evidence of their global scale evolution. The same forms of dolmens consisting of a chamber and a narthex are repeated in the rocky massif of the Rhodopes by Provadiya and the North Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.
