The first sacred male society is founded in the second half of the second millennia before Christ in the Rhodope Mountains by the king-priest of the Besi Thracians Orpheus. With his followers they went to periods of long fasting and vegetarianism, alcohol and women abstinence. The preliminary abstinences were necessary so that they can enter the true part of their service drinking kikeon throughout the ceremony (a special drink made of baked barley, diluted in honey water, flavoured with fresh mint) and inhaling the white smoke of herbs they were throwing in the fire in front of them. Their effect could be felt by people who have been fasting for a long time and it has been intensified by special hymns they were singing with Orpheus to reach a state of ecstasy and through it the divine revelations.
