The Thracian rulers have had well-known castles ever since the Ancient Times. The ancient Greeks describe them as "tyursis", meaning "tower" because the high fortified castles could be seen from many miles. However, these were not ordinary fortress towers because the rulers had a big entourage of guards for which there were special buildings with annexes for the horses, the food supply, the carts etc. There are remains of the "tyursis" along Bulgaria. However, the most well-known in the recent years has become Perperikon. The castle was built by the mythical Thracians at least 2 300 years ago.
