The Karlukovo Monastery is situated at the gorge of the Iskar River. The monastery has a high-quality painted decoration in the present-day church. At the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom there has been another monastery under the name of "Viktorova laka". It has been plundered and dilapidated soon after the invasion of the Ottoman oppressors. In XVI c. a new monastery is built which hasn't lasted for long. In 1834 the rich patriot Stoyan Chalakov from Plovdiv renovates the buildings and brings life to the monastery. In 1849 and 1877 the monastery is again plundered and burned by rebels and the monks are killed. At the last invasion only the church has survived with its precious mural paintings which are well-preserved. Stylistically the murals in the church belong to the artistic trends of XVI-XVII c. The images are in the traditional graphic manner. During the second half of XVIII c. the carver Urosh makes a beautiful iconostasis, part of which is in the National History Museum. The icons are made by Dimiter Zogrf.
