The Kremikovtzi Monastery "Saint Georgi" lies at a distance of 2 km east of Kremikovtzi quarter of Sofia. It is situated on the southern slopes of the Stara Planina Mountains. A large number of specialists think that it dates back to the Middle Ages. However, exact data for its existence leads to XV c. From XV to XIX c. the monastery has a very intensive activity. It is located on a semi-circle terrace with steep slopes from the south, west and north. It is not hidden in the folders of the location, on the contrary - it attracts the attention of the beholder. The oldest building is the church "Saint Georgi" which according to the inscriptions of the mural paintings dates from XV c. In 1943 the local leader Radivoy decorates the church. At the northern wall of the temple's narthex is depicted his family portrait. Radivoy and his wife are wearing expensive boyar clothes with rich decoration. In his hands he is holding the sample of the renovated and decorated church. As an architectural type the building is among the most common ones in Bulgaria for the period of XIII -XIV c. It is a single-nave one with a semi-cylindrical vault. The church is built in the typical medieval style of alternating stone, bricks and mortar. Later on the church has had some changes in its design. Most probably an earthquake has caused serious damages to the western part which has been renovated after that. The murals in the "Saint Georgi" church are relatively well-preserved and are among the ones of high artistic value and influence from the Bulgarian art. There can be discerned different stages both in the architecture and the painting of the church. The whole decoration at the walls of the eastern part is made by one and the same person. It is uniform in style and iconographic scheme. The murals at the left half of the northern wall and the whole western wall are from a later period with a different style, manner, composition and difference in the technical performance. The paintings at the western façade of the church are significantly more graphic, with a lowered monumentality, typical for the period after XVI c. In their characteristics and artistic qualities the murals of the "Saint Georgi" church are a bright monument showing the development and the achievements of the Bulgarian monumental painting during XV-XVII c. Apart from the paintings, the old church has other monuments as well, testifying for the active artistic life in the monastery. Especially precious is the Kremikovtzi Gospel from 1497 which has been rewritten and given as a gift to the monastery. The monastery has helped for the preservation of the Bulgarian nationality.
