The Trun Monastery "Saint Archangel Michael" lies at a distance of 4 km northwest of the town of Trun, Pernik District. It is established at the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and has been an important cultural centre in the western part of Bulgaria. The only preserved building - the monastery's church is the testimony of that. It is a comparatively big one and is from the so-called "Aton's type". It has two layers of murals. The first layer dates from the period of construction of the church and only few fragments of it are preserved. The main part of the mural paintings date back to 1643. During the Ottoman yoke the monastery is destroyed and burned several times but is later restored by the local people. It becomes an important spiritual centre during the period of the National Enlightenment.
