The region is divided into two sub-regions: Yantra Region and Vit-Osam Region. The relief of the region is very diverse. From north to south here are located the plains by the Danube River, The Danube Hilly Plain, the Fore-Balkan. The most southern part is occupied by the Middle Stara Planina with an altitude of 2376 m. The climate of the region is temperate-continental. In the high parts it is mountainous. The Danube Plain is wide open from the north as a result of which there are cold air masses during the winter. The summer is warm and humid, while the autumn is mild and dry. The temperature inversions during wintertime are frequent event in the valleys in the Fore-Balkan and the Stara Planina Mountains. The mountainous climate of the Stara Planina Mountains, combined with the Alpine relief forms, create favourable conditions for the development of tourism in all seasons. The larger rivers in the region are Yantra, Rositza, Vit and Osam. The soils in the North Central Region are very diverse. The Danube plain is covered by black soils rich in humus which are favourable for the growing of grains, sunflower, sugar beet and hemp. The alluvial-meadow soils in the river valleys are favourable for the growing of vegetables. The forest fund is the richest in the Fore-Balkan and the Central Balkan. The main tree types are the beech and the hornbeam. The plain part of the North Central Region has few forests. The poplar and willow forests are located mainly in the plains near the Danube.
