The town of Harmanli is the centre of a municipality which occupies the central part of the Haskovo District. The municipality has 24 settlements. The town of Harmanli has a population of 20 000 inhabitants. The altitude of the town varies between 80 -300 m. The town is situated along the Harmanliyska River which is the right tributary of the Maritza River.

In the region have been discovered settlement mounds from the Eneolith, Thracian and Roman mounds and a medieval settlement. The present-day administrative centre originates in 1510 by the road connecting Asia and Europe. Since then is the first written evidence about its existence. In 1585 the Turkish vizier Sivyush Pasha ordered to be built a vault bridge over the river. The humpback bridge is preserved almost intact till present times.

The tourist sights of the town are: The Humpback Bridge, the Kervansarayat, built in the middle of XV c., the churches "St. Anastasii" from 1835 and "St. Ivan Rilski" and the menhir at the village of Ovcharovo.

The Menhir at the village of Ovcharovo dates back to the first century B.C. It is a vertically stuck into the ground huge rough stone block having a cult purpose. There are menhirs in Western Europe, North Africa, India, Siberia and Caucasus.
