The town of Dzhebel has a population of about 3000 inhabitants and is the centre of a municipality of 47 settlements. The town lies at a distance of 20 km south of Kardzhali. There are remains of a Thracian settlement and a medieval fortress in the region of the town. Until 1934 the town is known under the name of Sheh Dzhumaya. The municipality is specialized in the tobacco manufacture.
