The town of Krumovgrad has a population of 5 200 inhabitants and is the centre of a municipality of 78 settlements. The town lies at a distance of 49 km from the district town of Kardzhali. It is situated along both banks of the Krumovitza River in the Eastern Rhodope Mountains. Until 1943 the town is known under the name of Kushu Kavak. There are deposits of lead-zinc ores, asbestos and mica. Krumovgrad is the centre of a tobacco manufacturing region. There are remains of the ancient times in the region.
