The town of Momchilgrad has a population of 7 900 inhabitants and lies at a distance of 16 km south of Kardzhali. The town is the centre of a municipality of 48 settlements. Until 1934 the town is known as Mastanli. The region around Momchilgrad is rich in poly-metal ore deposits. There are findings from the Neolith, the Eneolith and the Bronze Age in the region. Near the town is located the second most important sanctuary for the Thracian people - the sanctuary near Tatul. There can be seen remains of religious Thracian buildings. Some of them are preserved in an excellent condition.
