On the territory of the Smolyan District are located the cultural-historic monuments: Agushevi konatzi( a 30 km long castle - the biggest feudal castle on the Balkan Peninsula built in 1843), the architectural and ethnographic reserve Shiroka Laka, the revival period quarter in Zlatograd.

The most famous natural landmarks are: the reserves "Soskovcheto", "Kazanite", "Kastraklii", tended reserves "Amzovo" and "Momchilovski dol", the Trigrad gorge, the Buynovo gorge, the South Rhodopean eco-path, the rocky phenomena "Slona"/The Elephan/, "Nevestata"/The Bride/, "Glavta" /The head/, "Pobit kamak", "Chudnite mostove"/The miraculous bridges/, "Dyavolskite mostove" /The Devil's Bridges/.

At a distance of 12 km from Smolyan is located the national mountainous resort of Pamporovo. It has an average altitude of 1650 m and is a picturesque hilly plateau with vast meadows and coniferous forest of spruce and white pine.
