The relief of the district is very diverse. From north to south are arranged the Stara Planina Mountains, The Rear Balkan Valley, the Burgas Valley, the Middle-Tundzha Valley and the Sakar-Strandzha hilly and mountainous sub-districts.

The eastern part of the Stara Planina Mountains is indented by the longitudinal valleys of the Luda Kamchiya and the Hadzhiyka Rivers. The Black Sea coast is heavily indented and offers very favourable tourism conditions with its vast beach lines, sand dunes, numerous bays, lagoons and firths. Here is located the biggest Bulgarian bay - The Burgas Bay.

The region has three climatic zones - temperate, Mediterranean and transitional-continental.

The climatic conditions play an important role for the development of tourism. Of greatest importance are the dunes where the air temperature is above 18^oC. For Sozopol the air temperature for a period of 119 days a year is above 13^oC, while the water temperature keeps these degrees for 130-140 days.

The rivers in this part are short and flow into the Black Sea. The Southeastern Region is rich in mineral springs. A larger part of them are used for bottling and spa centers. Among the most important mineral baths are those of Burgas, Sliven, Korten and Straldzha.

The soils of the region are also very diverse. Prevailing, however, are the maroon forest types and the resinous soils suitable for growing grain cultures, sunflower, vineyards and fruits. The Sakar soil region is suitable for growing oriental tobacco.

The forests occupy 24% of the territory of the region with prevalence of the deciduous forests of oak and beech.

In this part of Bulgaria there are three administrative centers - Sliven, Yambol and Burgas.
