The town of Sungurlare has a population of about 4 000 inhabitants and lies at a distance of 63 km northwest of Burgas. Sungurlare is a municipal centre of 29 component settlements. On the territory of the settlement have been discovered remains of ancient settlements. There is evidence for the existence of the town in the Ottoman registry books from XVI c. and 1731, where it is mentioned under the names of Songulare and Songular. Between the years 1829-1830 forty-four families immigrate to Southern Russia and found the present-day village of Nikolaevka in Krim District, Ukraine.
