The village of Chavdar is the centre of a separate municipality. It is located in the Zlatitza-Pirdop Valley at a distance of 67 km east of Sofia with a population of 1 400 inhabitants. A prehistoric mound and the remains of a Thracian and a medieval settlement have been discovered within the limits of the village. The village is described in the Ottoman documents in 1430.
