The village of Chelopech is the centre of a separate municipality in the Sofia District. It is located at the south-eastern slope of the Etropole part of the Stara Planina Mountains at a distance of 71 km east of Sofia. Chelopech has a railway station on the Sofia-Karlovo-Burgas railway line. On he territory of the settlement have been discovered a settlement mound from the Neolith, remains of medieval fortresses and a Slavic settlement. The village is mentioned in the Ottoman documents in 1430.
