In astronomical aspect with the setting in of the spring equilibrium nature is born for a new life. In the Bulgarian festive calendar there are three significant holidays during March: 1st March, 9th March- Mladentzi and 25th March - Blagoveshtenie. In the folk conceptions of the Bulgarians Baba Marta is a woman. They believe that when she is angry the weather is bad, and when she smiles it is warm and mild. On 1st March every Bulgarian puts a martenitza on their lapel, wrist or neck. The martenitza is a typical Bulgarian ritual symbol. It is put for health, longevity, fertility and abundance. It is made of intertwined cotton or woolen red and white threads. The white colour is a symbol of the purity, innocence and joy. For the Bulgarian people the white is a sign of the cleanliness. White are the festive bridal dresses, the saints and the angels also wear white clothes. The red is the colour of liveliness, health and love fire. The red is the colour of the rising and setting sun, the flowing blood and the fire. In the traditional Bulgarian wedding the bride's veil is red. People tie red threads on fruit trees, on the kids' hands to protect them from evil and to bring them health. This is the magic power in the martenitza. In the Rhodope Region the martenitzas are made of different colours, while in the Sofia and Melnik Region the main colours are blue and red. The blue colour symbolizes the sky and the earth. The green colour stands for fertility, health, festivity and revival. The threads of the martenitza are intertwined to the left. The traditional Bulgarian martenitza has various symbolic elements such a: snails' shells - for health and power, garlic cloves - for protection from evil spirits, beads - against evil eyes and a coin for welfare.
