For the Bulgarian people this holiday coincides with the ancient pagan ideas about the reviving nature. The Bulgarian people have managed to combine the ancient with the more modern holidays. One of the most important rituals of Easter is the eggs-painting. The eggs are painted on Great Thursday or Saturday. They are called "pisani", "shareni" and with other names. The tradition has it that they must be painted early in the morning before sunrise. At some places in Bulgaria it is believed that this should happen before the church's bell strikes. The painted eggs are the main ritual element from the Easter festive cycle. The first painted egg must be red and is left in the house. The red colour symbolizes not only Jesus' blood but also the life, fertility and revival. On Great Friday Jesus has been crucified and that is considered to be the hardest day in the year. In Bulgaria this day is known under the name of "Razpeti Petak". People go to church on this day where Jesus Christ is symbolically buried. People leave their gifts on the crucifix and a flower on the shroud of Christ. On their way out of the church every one takes a flower back home for health and luck. The eggs are decorated on Friday. The maiden and the young unmarried women use all their talent for this activity. On Great Saturday people make the final preparations for the holiday. They clean their homes and knead the Easter bread at the middle of which they place a painted red egg. They also knead smaller loaves which they take to their god parents and mother-in-law. On Saturday they knead the "kozunaks", kill a lamb which is backed with rice. After church everyone returns home with a lit candle and greet each other with the words "Hristos Voskrese"/Jesus has risen/ and the answer to that is "Vo Istina Vozkrese"/ He has indeed/. Easter day is the end of the Easter fasting period. People organize contests with the painted eggs. Every member of the family chooses an egg and places it in their hand so as only the top of the egg is seen. Thus they knock their opponent's egg. The table on Easter Day should be affluent. People place on the table ritual bread with various decorations such as wreaths of flowers, crosses, complicated knot work and each symbol has a specific message. Easter is celebrated for three days. During the festive days people dance horos and sing songs. The maiden and the bachelors swing themselves on swings and sing special ritual songs. People with the names of Velichko, Velika, Vazkresia, Velko, Vichka and Paskal celebrate their name's day on this holiday.More about 'Traditions' :
