People with the names of Georgi, Gancho, Georgitza, Gergana, Gyuro and their derivatives celebrate their name's day on this date. Saint George is depicted as a young warrior on the icons. He gallops to the right dressed in a short tunica armed with a spear. Saint George rides a white horse and stabs his spear in a beast looking like a crocodile. The saint is a patron of the home animals and people connect the field fertility with him. The image of the saint looks amazingly like the image of the Thracian horseman. Saint George's Day is a holiday of great ritual symbolism. Each ritual activity has a magic or protective function. People sing songs of Saint George from whom they expect to bring them fertility and welfare throughout the spring. Each home prepares a "kurban"/a ritual lamb dish/ in honour of the saint. For the kurban they sacrifice the first newborn male lamb placing a wreath and a burning candle on its head. They give the lamb to lick some salt (symbol of repletion and fertility) and to graze some fresh grass. This ritual is performed so that the people are healthy and to pray for abundant pasture for the animals. Early in the morning women and children gather flowers and twigs from which they make the wreath for the lamb and decorate their homes. People make ritual bread for this day. Part of the bread is for the animals and the rest is for the festive table. Some is also given to the neighbours for health. The favourite folk symbols of fertility, health, spring and evil protection are used for the decoration of the ritual bread. The cross protects all the fields, the rainbow is a magic for fertility, the yard fence stands for riches etc. The festive bread is called with different names among which: "ovcharnik", "koshara", "bogovitza", "gergyovski kravay", "harman". It is kneaded by a maiden or a young unmarried woman with coloured water (with fresh flowers in it). During its preparation the women sing special songs and perform special rituals. The lamb and the bread are sanctified in the church. After the service a common table is laid. Part of the lamb is also distributed among neighbours for health and luck. The young people tie their swings on a walnut tree and swing all maidens for health and welfare. Different contests are organized for the holiday - wrestling games and races.
