The holiday has a changing date - the last Saturday before the Palm Sunday. According to the Bulgarian folk calendar Lazar's Day is the holiday of the fields, meadows and the forests. It is also the holiday of the girls who after this day gain a new social status. They can find a beloved one and get married. The girls at the age of 13-14 are prepared for the ritual of "lazaruvane" from the middle of the Easter fasting period. They learn songs and dances and choose a leader. The girls wear festive clothes and wreaths and flowers in their hair. The ceremonial going round the village starts from the home of the leader. When the girls enter the house they start singing songs for every member of the family starting from the oldest. The ritual dance of the "lazarki" is called "boenak". While dancing they jump high so that the crops rise high and the farm animals are fertile. They perform a ritual circle of the fields praying for fertility. All the people from the village gather around the "lazarsko horo". People expect the lazarki with anticipation and joy. They give them eggs (symbol of the new life) and other things. In Bulgaria in the smaller towns and most of the villages the traditions of the Lazar's Day are preserved.
People with the names of Lazar, Lazarina, Lalka, Lala and other derivatives celebrate their name's day on this day. More about 'Traditions' :
