Saint Saint Konstantin and Elena are depicted on the icons standing upright at both sides of the crucifix which they hold, wearing crowns of precious stones and with the areole of saints. People go to churches and monasteries on this day and leave their gifts to the saints' icons - towels, shirts, socks, a lamb or a calf etc. This holiday is connected to a very interesting Bulgarian ritual - the "nestinarstvo"/ a dance over burning coal/. It is typical for the Strandzha Region. During the day people gather around a spring with healing water where they wash their faces for health and beauty. The ayazmo, as the spring is called, is usually situated in a forest site out of the village. Here people organize wrestling games, races, dance horos and make a kurban. They lay common tables where they eat and drink till the evening. At dawn they come back to the village for the "nestinarsko" horo. The nestinars can be men and women. The women are wearing a long white knee-length shirt and are bare-foot. Before the ritual dance they are smoked with incense by an elderly woman. They inhale the smoke, light a candle and make the sign of a cross with their fingers. The drum beaters go near them and invite them to start the dance beating the drums louder and louder. Then the women dancers take the icon of the saints and start their dance over the burning coal. The "nestinarstvo" is considered a God's gift. The nestinar dancers forecast in trance the weather, the fortune of the whole village or of separate people. They claim that they have holy visions and everyone believes them. The main nestinar inherits his title. It is only he who can give the power and the magic of the holy vision to the other nestinar dancers. His home is considered sacred and there are preserved the icons of Virgin Mary and that of St. St. Konstantin and Elena. Ever since 1st May he smokes the icons with incense in front of the gathered nestinar dancers at his home. Thus he gives the power to the other nestinars as well. The drum has a special place in the ritual and is preserved throughout the year in the church. It is also passed from generation to the next. The fire is the symbol of the sun's discus. People with the names of Konstantin, Kostadin, Kostin, Kosta, Elena, Elenka and Lena celebrate their name's day on this holiday. More about 'Traditions' :
